Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) & ECMO for Advanced Heart & Lung Support
Apollo Hospitals, Chennai offers comprehensive temporary and long-term mechanical circulatory support (MCS) for patients with severe heart or lung failure. These technologies help maintain blood flow and oxygenation when the heart and/or lungs are unable to function adequately on their own.
Our specialist ECMO Team offers national and international patient retrievals for patients requiring advanced ECMO support.
When is MCS/ECMO Used?
Mechanical support is used in critical care as:
Bridge-to-Decision: When ECMO is instituted as a temporary measure to salvage patients and await decision for further care.
Bridge-to-Transplant: To stabilize patients while they await a donor organ or candidacy for organ transplantation.
Bridge-to-Recovery: To allow temporary support while the heart or lungs recover from illness, injury, or surgery.
Destination Therapy: For patients ineligible for transplant, long-term support devices are used as a permanent solution.
Types of Devices Offered at Apollo
ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation)
VA ECMO: Supports both heart and lung function
VV ECMO: Supports lung function only used in cardiogenic shock, severe respiratory failure, and during emergency resuscitation.
Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs)
Helps the left or right ventricle pump blood
Used as both short and long-term support
Is implanted internally and connected externally to a power source
Ideal as a bridge to transplant or destination therapy
Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
A balloon inserted into the aorta to enhance blood flow and reduce cardiac workload
Common in high-risk cardiac surgeries and early-stage heart failure
Impella
A catheter-based micro-pump inserted via the aorta and placed within the heart
Temporarily unloads the heart, improves output and stabilizes patients during acute cardiac decompensation
Total Artificial Heart (TAH)
Replaces function of both heart ventricles
As a Bridge-to-Transplant or destination therapy for patients with irreversible biventricular failure
Considered when a single VAD is not sufficient
